Vacation/Holiday: limit of one 1/2 day absence on same day

We had a scenario where someone needed to take 1/2 day (AM) as sick and the rest of the day as 1/2 day (PM) vacation/holiday.
I believe the exact scenario was the employee had used up most all of their sick time for the year and only had 1/2 day sick time left. So they put 1/2 day sick time for morning. Then they wanted the remainder of the day to use vacation/holiday so they would still get paid for it.
You can only assign a single 1/2 day entry for a day. You are unable to enter in both 1/2 day sick and 1/2 day vacation/holiday on the same day.
We would like that ability to assign two separate and different 1/2 day absence types on the same day.
